Louisa, Ky. — Luke Fetherolf tossed two touchdowns and Caven Williams ran for two in a 28-6 Lawrence Co. victory over Rowan Co. Friday at Luke Varney Jr. Memorial Stadium.

The Dawgs came out to a roar from the home crowd.

Rowan Co. got on the board first on a 47 yard touchdown pass from Matthew Hamilton to Will Richardson and the Vikings led 6-0 early in the second quarter.

Lawrence Co. took the lead on a Caven Williams 24 yard touchdown run and Brayden Queen added the PAT for a 7-6 lead with 7:44 left in the second quarter.

#4 Caven Williams grabs first touchdown of the season.

With under a minute left Rowan Co. was around midfield and tried a hook and lateral but the ball came loose and Braxton Davis pounced on it for the Dawgs. On the next play after the turnover Luke Fetherolf connected with Carlo Chicko on a touchdown pass and Queen tacked on the point after and Lawrence Co. led 14-6.

In the third quarter Fetherolf hooked up with Chicko once again this time on 4th down for an 18 yard touchdown and Queen made it 21-6 with 7:56 left in the third.

#5 Kaden Johnson fighting for extra yards against the Vikings.

In the final period Williams raced in from 19 yards out and Queen added the extra point to make it 28-6 Lawrence County.

Sophomore Ty Brooks had a monster night defensively with a sack, forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

#30 Brayden Queen was 4-4 on extra points Friday. #22 Gray Derifield did a great job as the holder.

The Bulldogs ( 1-0 ) will host Shelby Valley ( 0-1 ) next Friday night. The Wildcats lost at Letcher Co. Central 47-12 Friday.

Rowan Co. ( 0-1 ) will play East Carter ( 1-0 )  at Morehead State University next Friday night.

Lawrence Co. Head Coach Alan Short

COACH’S COMMENTS

“… Very proud of our kids for the effort that they brought tonight. No such thing as an ugly victory, so hat-tip to Rowan Co. they probably gave us more than some of our guys were anticipating and that’s probably my fault for not having us as prepared as we should have been. But on the flip side of that we all want it to be perfect. It’s a start and we will take it I would rather be 1-0 then 0-1. We will get to work on correcting some things.”

“…  Explosive play right before half on a great throw from Luke Fetherolf to Carlo Chicko to give us a little cushion at 14-6 was huge. That is something I was always talk about is winning the middle eight. The last four of the first half and first four minutes of the second half.”

“… First touchdown of the second half on fourth down was another great throw from Fetherolf who dropped it right into Chicko after great protection from the offensive line. And that just shows the glimpses that this team is going to be able to do consistently. We are a young bunch and each time we go out we are going to learn. Tip your hat to Rowan Co. who has struggled in years past. Coach Ford had them playing at a much higher level tonight. I think they have a chance to have a good year.”

“… 100% the offensive and defensive lines are were the games are won. And we fell like we have 8/9 guys that we can play on both sides of the ball. We are definitely going to try and keep the offensive line fresh by rotating in the middle of a series which is kind of unorthodox but there is a good reason for it.”

“… Great effort by our defense, I would like to see them tackle a little bit lower at times and that will come as the season progresses but they did an outstanding job. I think we only had one or two bad plays. Really proud of that group.”
