2016 Lawrence Co. 8U Cal Ripken All-Stars
Cynthiana, Ky. — The 2016 Lawrence Co. 8U All Star team traveled last week to play in the Cal Ripken state tournament and came away with a 9-7 victory over Big Sandy all stars out of Pike Co. at River Road Park. The youngsters avenged a loss to Big Sandy who beaten LC in the District championship earlier in July.
Lawrence Co. jumped all over Big Sandy scoring five runs in the first inning all with two outs. Gunnar Woods scored the first run on a RBI single by Braxton Davis. Then Ty Brooks had the big blow, a three run triple scoring Ayden Jude, Davis & Aiden Mynhier. Owen Pack singled in Brooks to finish out the 1st inning. Top of 5th Woods knocked in 3 runs. Ryland Brady, Andrew Ratcliffe & Gray Derifield with a base hits up the middle, Mynhier scored our 9th run in top of the 6th inning, off a hit by Pack.
Lawrence Co. defensively turned a couple double plays this tournament between Davis & Derifield at the SS & 2B positions.
Lawrence Co. 8U finished 1-2 in the state tournament and didn’t qualify for single elimination portion.
Buffalo, W. Va. — This past weekend the Lawrence Co. 8U team traveled across the river into the mountain state battling the heat and four other teams to finish in second place despite missing four starters for the weekend. This really shows the depth of the league to be able to compete at that level.
In the championship game it was Lloyd Lumberjack’s a travel team out of Greenup Co. The team has players from Greenup Co., Boyd Co., Russell and surrounding area. They’ve been playing together all summer.
LC went 1-1 in pool play. Lost to South Shore 8-4, then beat Buffalo 14-1 in pool play. Beat Flatwoods 16-6 in first round of single elimination tournament and then lost in the championship game.
