KHSAA approves nine-week football season
Fall sports in Kentucky will happen this year, but will look a little different.
The KHSAA passed a motion to approve a nine-week high school football season today. Teams will begin regular season play on September 11, with practices beginning August 24.
Schools will not play less than eight games during the regular season. Games scheduled for August 21, 28 and September 3 will not be played unless rescheduled later in the fall. The post season will begin on November 13 with all five rounds to be played and the state championship will be played at Kroger Field on December 11-12.
Other fall sports such as soccer, volleyball and cross country can begin practicing August 24. The board also passed some measures such as teams can only play in Kentucky or in neighboring out of state counties.

KHSAA Approves Delayed Start to High School Football Season
The KHSAA is planning on hosting high school football games in the state of Kentucky this fall.
The KHSAA Board of Control voted Tuesday to begin a nine-week high school football season Sept. 11. Typically schools play ten regular season games in 11 weeks, followed by five rounds of playoffs. A look at the calendar for Kentucky High School Football in the fall of 2020:
Aug. 24 — Helmet-only practices begin
Sept. 11 — Regular-season play begins (nine-week regular season)
Nov. 13 — First round of playoffs (keeping all five rounds)
Dec. 11-12 — State finals at UK moved ahead one week
Other fall sports are also set to begin practicing Aug. 24. Cross country, volleyball, soccer and field hockey will still be able to play 80% of their regular season games by abiding by the following calendar:
Aug. 24 — Light practice (six hours per week)
Aug. 31 — Full practice
Sept. 7 — Full competition begins
Jefferson County Public Schools athletic director Jerry Wyman abstained from voting on all matters until the Board of Control meets again prior to the start of the season on August 20.
The Board of Control also moved to limit sporting events to meetings between teams from the state of Kentucky. The exceptions to this rule are out of state schools that reside in counties that border Kentucky. There will also be a cap on the number of players in uniform at each game to ensure social distancing: Cross Country 10; Field Hockey 24; Football 60; Soccer 24; and Volleyball 15.
