Treasurer Metcalf Backs National Effort to End “Debanking”

FRANKFORT, Ky (August 12, 2025) – Kentucky State Treasurer Mark H. Metcalf has joined a coalition of 31 state financial officers from 23 states in supporting President Donald J. Trump’s executive order to end “debanking” — the practice of denying or restricting financial services based on political, ideological, or religious beliefs.

“No Kentuckian should be denied access to financial services because of their political beliefs, faith, or lawful associations,” Treasurer Metcalf said. “This order takes a vital step toward restoring fairness and neutrality in our financial system.”

The executive order directs federal regulators to remove “reputational risk” from banking oversight guidelines and requires the Small Business Administration to reinstate clients previously denied services for political or ideological reasons.

Treasurer Metcalf and his fellow signers pledged to work alongside federal partners to ensure banking remains open to all lawful customers, regardless of their views.
