KENTUCKY STATE POLICE INVESTIGATE OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING DEATH IN SHELBY COUNTY

AUGUST 5, 2025 – written by WADE QUEEN

RYAN PATRICK MCBRIDE.
A Kentucky State Police special unit has been called into an investigation the shooting death of a Shelby County man by a deputy who was grazed during an exchange of gunfire in the very early morning hours of darkness.

According to the press release statement, the Kentucky State Police (KSP) Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) was requested by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) to investigate an officer-involved shooting death that occurred on Monday, August 4, just after 1:00 A.M.

KSP troopers and detectives arrived on the scene and initiated an investigation. The preliminary investigation indicates that the SCSO was requested to respond to a domestic incident at a residence located on Blackwell Road in Shelbyville, KY. Upon arriving at the residence, a deputy encountered a male and female outside of the residence.

During the interaction, the male individual, who was identified as Ryan Patrick McBride, 41, of Shelbyville, KY., retrieved a firearm and began firing the gun in the direction of the deputy. At least one round struck a piece of the deputy’s equipment, resulting in minor injury.

The deputy discharged his agency-issued firearm, striking Ryan McBride and causing life-threatening injuries. Ryan McBride was later pronounced deceased at the scene by the Shelby County Coroner.

The deputy, who has not been identified, was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated and he has since been released. There were not any other injuries that were reported, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The Kentucky State Police has statewide jurisdiction and investigates officer-involved shootings throughout the commonwealth as requested by local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. The KSP is committed to being transparent while ensuring the integrity of the investigation. To protect the integrity of an ongoing investigation, it is the KSP standard operating procedure not to release specific details until vital witnesses have been interviewed and pertinent facts have been gathered. Timelines to complete investigations vary based on the complexity of the case.
This deputy shooting case in Shelby County marks the 23rd police-involved shooting incident so far in Kentucky in 2025.
