Kentucky Power Storm Update
Friday, December 25, 2020 – 5:30 p.m.
Summary
After a windy and snowy winter storm moved through eastern Kentucky on Christmas Eve, approximately 8,000 Kentucky Power customers were without power this morning. As of 5:30 p.m., nearly 5000 of those customers have been restored.
Storm Response Efforts
More than 215 Kentucky Power personnel and business partners have been working today to get customers restored as quickly as possible. An additional 90 line workers and personnel from sister companies will be in the hardest hit areas assisting tomorrow.
Outages and Estimated Time of Restoration
Crews made great progress today with restoration, and favorable weather tomorrow should allow that to continue on Saturday.
- Kentucky Power’s Hazard district including Perry, Leslie, Knott, Letcher and Breathitt counties will have 95% of its customers restored by Sunday night, meaning the majority will be on sooner.
- In the Pikeville district, 95% customers in Pike, Johnson, and Floyd counties will be restored by late Saturday night, meaning the majority will be on sooner. Additional outages occurring throughout the day contributed to overall outage numbers.
- In the Ashland district, 95% customers in Carter and Lawrence counties should be restored by late tonight.
For everyone’s health and safety with the ongoing Covid-19 crisis, please do not approach power company personnel in the field.
Weather
Various parts of the eastern Kentucky territory reported snow fall ranging from four to eight inches and in some areas the snow was wet and heavier than forecasted, which is the type that can wreak havoc on electrical systems.
