Kentucky Power Restoration Update

Sunday, September 29, 2024 – 11:30 a.m.

 

Summary

Heavy rain and high winds caused by Hurricane Helene swept through Kentucky Power’s service territory Friday afternoon causing extensive damage, numerous downed trees and power outages for 44,000 customers.

 

Current Situation

Crews have been able to restore nearly 70 percent of customer outages since the peak of the storm on Friday. Currently, there are approximately 13,500 customer outages. The majority of customers impacted by outages are in the following counties Boyd (3,161), Carter (2,187), Greenup (1,489), Lawrence (1,162), Pike (1,159) and Rowan (1,135). Crews are working to replace numerous broken poles, cross arms, transformers and downed spans of wire in each county.

Storm Response Efforts

There are more than 1,000 workers committed to this restoration process, including crews from Kentucky Power’s sister companies, Indiana Michigan Power and Public Service of Oklahoma, and hundreds of other out-of-state resources assisting from West Virginia, Missouri, Kansas and Wisconsin.
