Kentucky coal miner dies in Logan County, WV

LOGAN COUNTY, W.Va. (WCHS) — A Kentucky man died while working at a coal mine in Logan County Friday evening, state officials said.

Gary Chapman, 33, of South Williamson sustained fatal injuries while working at the Mountaineer II Mine near Sharples, marking the fourth miner to die in 2024, according to a statement from the Office of the Governor.

“When we lose a miner, it’s not just a loss for the community, but a loss for the entire State of West Virginia,” Gov. Justice said in the statement. “ “Mr. Chapman’s loss is a powerful reminder that we should always have a deep gratitude for every one of our coal miners.”
