James Donald Cavins, Sr., born May 16, 1940 in Garrett, KY to Ruye and Sadie Cavins passed peacefully into the loving arms of his savior surrounded by family.
Jim was a pillar in his service to the Lord preaching the gospel for 55 years. He was a stellar athlete on the Fort Gay Viking football field, where he met his surviving wife and soulmate Irvinia Sue Webb. He served his country in the US Navy and retired from Norfolk Southern, where he was known as “Preacher”.
He is survived by his children Cathy Waller (Russell), James Donald Cavins, Jr. (Tracie), Gregory Allen Cavins (Joyce), and Mark Randall Cavins (Kristi); 14 grandchildren Jeremy, Megan, Danielle, Zachary, Tyler, Adam, Nicholas, Dylan, Kassidi, Journey, Cotton, Tyger, Noah, and Madelynne; 4 great grandchildren Maliaya, Samson, Rowan, and Harrison; brother John R. Cavins (Rita); and sisters Linda and Joyce.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruye and Sadie; Pauline Cavins who loved him and raised him from the age of 3; and brothers Ronnie, Eugene, and Ruye, Jr.
Jim will be missed by the countless lives he touched and by all blessed to know him. He spent his entire life in servitude alongside his wife and cherished lifelong friends Clifford Earl and Jeannie Tackett, who were his family in Christ.
“Weeping may endureth for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.” Psalms 30:5 KJV
You fought the good fight and your race is run. Go shout on those hills of glory Brother Jim.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, September 18, 2024 at 1:00 PM in the Young Funeral Home Chapel. Burial with full military honors will follow in Wellman Cemetery.
Friends may visit the family on Wednesday, September 18, 2024 from 11:30 AM until time of service at the Young Funeral Home Chapel.
Young Funeral Home has been entrusted with the care of Brother Cavins and his family.
