How To Pick The Perfect Swimsuit

Finding a swimsuit can feel difficult when many designs and colors compete for attention. Swimwear stores offer a great many styles each season, and this variety can slow decision-making. However, with preparation and clear choices, you can select swimwear that suits you. Here are some practical steps to help you pick the perfect swimsuit:

Understanding your body proportions

You don’t have to have a particular type of body to wear any swimsuit – brands like SKIMS bikinis have something to suit absolutely every person and every body. That being said, it can help to understand how your body proportions will affect the look and fit of different styles before you make a purchase.

Before choosing a style, measure your bust, waist, and hips so you understand your proportions. These measurements help you narrow your options and avoid guessing when you shop. If your bust, waist, and hips measure similarly, you may prefer swimsuits that include ruffles, textured fabric, or bold patterns. These visual details can create contrast across the swimsuit and change how the garment looks on your body.

If your waist measures smaller than your bust and hips, you may prefer two-piece swimsuits or styles with cut-out panels. These designs emphasize the waist area and create visual balance between the upper and lower body.

If your bust measures larger than your waist and hips, halter-neck swimsuits or supportive one-piece designs may feel more comfortable. These styles distribute fabric tension across the torso.

Body measurements do not have to dictate your swimsuit choice. The best swimsuit is one you like and feel good in. But they can help you understand which construction features may feel comfortable when you try on a swimsuit.

Selecting the right fabric

Fabric choice affects comfort, durability, and how the swimsuit behaves in water. Manufacturers commonly use nylon, polyester, or blended fabrics when producing swimwear. Whether you’re wild swimming or pool swimming makes a difference here, as polyester fabrics resist chlorine damage better than many alternatives. If you swim frequently in pools, polyester swimsuits may last longer than swimsuits made from other materials.

Nylon fabrics often feel lighter and smoother against the skin. Some swimmers prefer nylon blends because they dry quickly after leaving the water.

On the other hand, many swimsuits contain spandex. Spandex fibers increase stretch and help the fabric return to its original structure after movement. However, spandex blends may wear out faster when chlorine exposure is prolonged. If durability matters more than stretch, polyester-heavy fabrics may perform better.

Choosing colors and patterns

Color and pattern influence how a swimsuit looks when you wear it. Your skin tone may influence which colors you prefer when selecting swimwear. Bright colors often contrast strongly with darker skin tones. Some swimmers prefer this contrast because it makes the swimsuit stand out.

Neutral tones create a different visual effect. Black, navy, or deep maroon swimsuits create a more subtle visual appearance.

Patterns also influence visual proportions. Vertical lines lengthen visual proportions, while horizontal lines widen them. Large prints, on the other hand, draw attention to specific areas of the swimsuit. Small prints create a subtler visual effect across the swimsuit.

You can combine colors and patterns to adjust which areas draw attention.

Ensuring the right fit

Fit has a big influence on your comfort during swimming, walking, and sitting. A tight swimsuit may restrict movement. A loose swimsuit may shift position while you swim or walk along the beach.

Trying on swimwear in person helps you understand how the swimsuit feels during movement. When you try on a swimsuit, move around in the fitting room. Sit, bend, and stretch to see whether the swimsuit stays comfortable.

Final note

Choose swimwear that fits comfortably and suits your preferences. A swimsuit that fits well can improve comfort while you swim or relax by the water. When you focus on fit, fabric, and design features, selecting swimwear becomes easier.
