The Fort Gay High School Alumni Association (FGHSAA) recently elected officers for 2017 at the Annual Year-End Board of Directors meeting held in Fort Gay, West Virginia. FGHSAA was established in the 1990’s by FGHS graduates from the 40’s and 50’s originally as a class reunion activity but later transformed into a community organization for the purpose of “Giving Something Back” to the Fort Gay community.
A scholarship program was established which later developed into an Endowment Scholarship with the Marshall University Foundation. The first scholarship was awarded in 1998 in the amount of $500 and has since grown to $12,000 annually awarded to qualifying Tolsia High School graduates.
Gary A. Huff, a 1970 graduate of FGHS, will serve as President of the association. Huff currently serves as City Manager of Piqua, Ohio and is a graduate of Marshall University and Virginia Tech. Paul Salmons, a 1972 graduate of FGHS, will serve as Vice-President and Treasurer and Doris Staton, a 1959 graduate of FGHS, will serve as Secretary.
FGHSAA raises money throughout the year through direct donations and various fund raising activities including the Joe Damron Memorial Golf Tournament held each year during Labor Day Weekend at Eagle Ridge Golf Course. An Annual Alumni Banquet is also held at this time drawing over 250 attendees from the numerous decades of the school’s history. Featured highlights of the banquet include the presentation of the FGHSAA Distinguished Alumni Award and inductions into the FGHSAA Sports Hall of Fame.
Information about FGHSAA can be found on the association’s Facebook page.
