The Value of Time
Time is one of the most valuable gifts we have, yet it’s also one of the easiest things to take for granted. We all get the same 24 hours in a day, but how we use that time makes all the difference.
In the blink of an eye, I’m over 50 years old. How did that happen? I’m rounding the corner on my 30th year in education. I’m a proud mom of two grown-up kids, and I’m even a grandmother now. It feels like just yesterday I was cruising around in the ‘80s with the windows down, listening to my favorite songs on a cassette tape. Time has this sneaky way of flying by, and you can’t get it back.
It is important to use the gift of time wisely. Whether it’s time with family, time at work, or time spent on other things that matter to us, every moment counts. We often assume we’ll always have more time, but the truth is, none of us ever know how much we really have.
In schools, time is one of our greatest resources. Every school day is packed with lessons, activities, learning, and opportunities to change a life for the better. It is so inspiring to see a teacher work hard to make the most of the time they have with students, knowing that every minute in the classroom is a chance to make a difference. But learning doesn’t just happen in scheduled blocks—it happens in the small moments, too. A quick conversation in the hallway, a few extra minutes helping a kid after class, or a kind word by an adult in the building at just the right time can leave a lasting impact.
The same is true in life for all of us, no matter who we are. The time we give to others—listening, encouraging, or simply being present—is more valuable than anything else we can offer. A grown child will look back and remember the time a parent spent reading or playing with them more than any wrapped gift they received. A friend will appreciate the time we took to check in on them when they were struggling.
So, let’s be intentional with our time. Let’s spend it on what truly matters—helping others, building relationships, and leaving a positive legacy. Because once time is gone, we don’t get it back. The best thing we can do is use that gift wisely while we have it.
