On Wednesday, November 29, 2023, students from grades 3-8 participated in the Fort Gay Elementary school based social studies fair. The projects are classified based on division (grade level) and category (topic). There are three divisions: Division I (Grades 3-5), Division II (Grades 6-8), and Division III (Grades 9-12). The Social Studies Fair at the school only included divisions I and II. The projects can be divided up into the following categories: Anthropology, Economics, Geography, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Sate and Local Studies, US History, and World History.
The West Virginia State Social Studies Fair has a set of rigorous rules and regulations that students must follow such as size of their project display, length of oral presentation, the use of digital presentation aides, and many more. For the competition students were required to complete a project display that showcased the topic, write an abstract as outlined by the state format, and give an oral presentation detailing their project. Judges scored the projects in these areas, but each area has a different weight towards the overall score.
Fort Gay PreK-8 staff stated that they were proud of all the students who participated and thought that they all did such a wonderful job. The winning first place projects will move on to the county level fair which will be held at Crum PK-8 on Thursday, December 14, 2023.
