‘EXTREMELY HOT’ temps don’t keep people off the Levisa Fork
The hot temperatures didn’t keep people off the Levisa Fork during the first Paddlefest in Louisa! Twenty folks braved the temperatures to take to the river and enjoy the views. The paddlefest was organized by the Louisa/Lawrence County Trail Town Committee as a way to highlight the water trail that will soon be known as the Chatterwha Trace River Trail. The goal was to paddle upstream to Wall Bridge and then paddle back down to the Louisa City Ramp.
A family from Huntington, WV came with their 6 kids to celebrate Father’s Day. Courtney Ballengee stated that “Kayaking is an inexpensive hobby to have once you make those first purchases and with 6 kids, that’s important!” Most of the kayakers were pleasantly surprised at the natural beauty of this river that is in their back yard.
The goal now for Trail Town is to find some public access points on the Levisa, Tug and the Big Sandy so that people can get paddle craft in and out of the water conveniently and easily.
“The paddle UP stream to Wall Bridge was nice but it’s always easier to paddle downstream the whole way!” said Wes Kingsmore, Trail Team co-chairperson. Wes also stated that the next Community Paddle will be on July 15th but a location hasn’t been determined yet.
