Several awards presented…guest speaker from Sullivan University
A good sized crowd filled the Lawrence County Extension Office Thursday evening, March 10, during the annual Leader Recognition Banquet. Extension Council President, Neil Wilson, opened the event by welcoming everyone in attendance.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Lawrence County Homemaker President, Toby Roberts, and the 4-H Pledge was recited. Elsie Jones, Quilt Guild Member, sang the Star-Spangled Banner.
All Lawrence County Elected Officials were recognized for their service to the community.
Neil Wilson then introduced guest speaker for the evening, Mr. Allen Rose, Vice President of Business & Government Relations for Sullivan University, which will be opening a learning center in Louisa, located in the annex building of the Lawrence County Courthouse.
Rose said Sullivan University is thrilled to be in Louisa. “Nowhere else have I ever seen a warmer welcome than what we have received here” he said.
He explained that Sullivan is different, in that they focus on the student’s need, quality of life, teamwork, excellent service, and to educate parents about the jobs available in skilled trade. “Education and job markets are changing, and we have to be prepared. The only way to succeed today is through education” he said.
Sullivan University’s main campus is located on Louisville, with campuses also in Lexington, Ft. Knox, and now, in Louisa. “We have also been involved in educational partnerships in Europe, China, and India.” Many different programs of study are offered, and degrees ranging from a certificate to a doctorate are available. “We are happy to be in Louisa, and look forward to serving the community.”
Dinner was served, compliments of the Extension Office, and the invocation was led by County Court Clerk, Chris Jobe.
Several awards were presented in the fields of Family and Consumer Science, Agriculture/Natural Resources, 4-H Youth Development, and Community/Economic Developement. Award recipients were Debbie Handshaw, Bernice McCormick, Carolyn McGuinn, Rachel Jobe, Mark & Donna Sexton, Stephanie Dedifield, and Lego Club parents, headed up by Team Leader, Marsha Slone, were also recognized.
Elsie Jones ended the evening by leading a rendition of ‘My Old Kentucky Home.’
