Eagle Ridge Golf League News
What a night to play golf, even when your game is lost somewhere over the hill
As they say on WSAZ weather, Tuesday was one of Tony’s top 10 days. After hovering around 100° the last few days, Tuesday evening was perfect. What a night to play golf. I had two great playing companions, Judge Chaffin, and Ronnie Wellman, both the judge and Ronnie played well. As for me, my lowest score on any hole was a bogey, and I only had two of those.
Ronnie is an excellent golfer, and he has all the tools to make him better. He and I rode together, and he would always pull out the rangefinder to see precisely how far I needed to hit the ball to get to the flag. Our conversations went something like this. (Ronnie) “Bill, you are 115 yards out. Just get your 115-yard club out and hit it smooth.” (Bill) “Okay, Ronnie, that’s what I’ll do.” Thunk! (Ronnie) “Bill, you are now 85 yards from the pin, just smooth it. (Bill) Okay, Ronnie here goes.” Thunk! And so the day went. Ronnie continued helping me all the way, and it still didn’t matter. But it was a beautiful evening.
I must say that I did see some good shots from my group. However, Judge Chaffin had by far the most spectacular. On hole number 3, the most challenging of the par-three holes on the course, the judge hit the green in regulation. He was on the front edge, just beyond where he would’ve rolled back down the hill, and the flag was 45 to 50 feet away. He took aim at that pin and then stroked his putt. As I watch that ball roll across the green, it moved left, and then it moved back toward the right, then back and forth until finally straight into the hole. What a beautiful putt for a birdie.
When I collected the scores last night, I noticed that Mr. J Lynn See won a closest to the pin shot on a par three, and the closest to the pin on a second shot on the par-four. Having seen what he did, I knew that I would be getting a phone call this morning. And sure enough, the call came. After having played so well, he wanted to go out and play golf again. So tomorrow, I guess I will hit the links again.
