Charles Ray Fugitt, “Coach”, 89, of Nicholasville, KY, formerly of Louisa, KY passed away December 30, 2024 at 3:27 AM.

He was born April 20, 1935 at Chapman, KY, son of Benson Ray and Myrtle Chapman Fugitt. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 58 years Linda Curtright Fugitt, and his sister Kathleen.

He began his teaching career by teaching 8th grade math and science while serving as assistant football coach at Nicholasville and Jessamine County High School. He then accepted an assistant football coaching position at Dixie Heights High School, where he taught science at Turkey Foot Junior High School. The following year he was hired as the head football coach to replace Bill Shannon and joined the faculty at Dixie, where he taught math and science. While at Dixie, he served as Athletic Director and girls golf coach. Following these assignments, he moved into school administration as assistant principal and then principal of Lloyd Memorial High School, where he served for 15 years.

Mr. Fugitt was elected president of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1985 while serving as principal of Lloyd Memorial. He was only the third high school principal to be elected as president of SACS. In 1986 he joined Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in Atlanta, GA as the Associate Executive Director of the Commission on Secondary and Middle Schools. In 1998, he retired from the position of Associate Executive Director and in 2001, he and his wife returned to Nicholasville.

His dream of impacting the lives of his students was realized in his retirement years as he was often contacted by and socialized with former students and football players.

Mr. Fugitt is survived by his brother Bobby (Anna) Fugitt; nieces Beth (Dean) Bradley, Pat Peters, Melissa Humphrey, Julia (Don) Schultz, and Carol Fugitt; nephew Lee (Nora) Peters; and many great nieces and great nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, January 2, 2024 at 2:00 PM at the Young Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Dean Bradley and Brother William Copley officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery. Friends may visit the family Thursday, January 2, 2024 from 12:00 PM until time of services at the Young Funeral Home Chapel.

Young Funeral Home has been entrusted with the care of Mr. Fugitt and his family.
