BY VINCE DOTY, DEPUTY JUDGE/EXECUTIVE
The Lawrence County Fiscal Court would like to present some work details and future plans for Lawrence County.
- The first part of 2019 has been focused on getting the Lawrence County Road Department in order. The County has been attempting to replenish the equipment at the County Garage. We hope the citizens will be patient and understanding during this process. We ask our County Residents to bear with us during this time.
- The County has purchased a Grade all. The Grade all is being used to restore the ditches along the county roads throughout the County.
- The County has also purchased paving equipment. This purchase includes an asphalt paver, oil distributor truck, and a road broom. By doing our own paving, the County would reduce the cost thereby saving money. This would eliminate the need for private contractor payments and save the County between 25-30% of the cost to pave our County roads. The County’s goal is to begin paving roads within a few weeks.
- The County has also purchased a dozer and is in the process of purchasing an excavator.
- These pieces of equipment will be used but not limited to roads, clearing trails, and for FEMA projects the County has encumbered.
The Lawrence County Road Department has been working diligently since the first of the year. The flooding event in February caused quite a bit of damage to our roads. During this period the Lawrence County Road Department was out all hours working very hard to assess and repair the damage to many areas within our County.
Another new item that has been added this year is a Lawrence County Road Department Facebook page. By having this social media platform, the County can inform the citizens of road conditions as well as information on which roads the County will be working on and the dates. In addition, we can receive road work order requests through this page as well. Please feel free to visit the page at: https://www.facebook.com/LawrenceCountyRoadDepartment
In addition, we have a new Facebook page for our Solid Waste Coordinator office. We will be posting events such as our recent PRIDE Spring Cleanup event on this website and encourage our residents to interact with us to report illegal dumping or regarding any solid waste concerns effecting our County. Please feel free to visit us at: https://www.facebook.com/Lawrence-County-Solid-Waste-and-Recycle-Center
Lawrence County is also putting a lot of emphasis on jobs. We are currently working on a jobs plan that includes contacting and working with larger companies in the state as well as surrounding states to try and entice them to bring their business to Lawrence County. We are also looking at smaller businesses to help locate here as well as trying to help our local businesses expand their workforce.
Families and Kids are going to be a major focus for the County going forward. The County wants to provide more activities locally for our citizens.
The County has plans to fully utilize the Lawrence County Park, adjacent to Yatesville Lake State Park Campground located at Pleasant Ridge. The plans are to include the installation of a Splash-n-Spray park for kids to use free of charge. In order to provide this park improvement, we will have to have approval from the Army Corp of Engineers, which we are hopeful to receive.
The County will also be purchasing peddle boats for use at Yatesville Lake as well as putting together a 9-hole frisbee disc golf course at the Lawrence County Park. We are also working on a scavenger hunt activity for the kids at the Lawrence County Park. In addition to these projects the Amphitheater will be remodeled so the park can host events ranging from music, comedy, plays and more. We also plan on creating more campsites. We have also created a new Facebook page for the Lawrence Park at https://www.facebook.com/lawrencecountyparkwildernessroad.
The County is also planning on creating a new Soccer field for our youth. With the rise of popularity of Soccer, the County’s Youth Soccer program has grown to hundreds of kids. This field will have its own location with areas designated around it for a public park. This will be a regulation size field that our youth program can use to host tournaments which will bring economic contributions to the County.
With everyone working and coming together the future of Lawrence County looks bright.
again nothing about giving back money for the city roads
Please explain why the county owes the city
The residents of the City pay County taxes also. We should also receive benefit from them too.
The city is separate from the county. The county maintains county road not city. If you have a problem with a city maintained road it should be directed to that entity.
Instead of being a Debbie downer and looking to find something negative in a positive article, smile, take a deep breath and look on the funnier side of life. While you are practicing that look for the correct venue for your complaint. Good day!
let me try to explain this the city residents also pay county taxes and more than likely it’s probably a third of there tax revenue but they don’t get nothing in return would you think it’s okay to pay a tax and get nothing in return I don’t
The city roads isn’t near as bad as the county roads. You better be glad you don’t live in the county because I’m sure our roads are worse the city’s. We the people that live in the county have to pay for the city. So… either way you have to pay taxes. Part of life.
just explain why you have to pay for the city
The county has nothing to do with the city. – that’s why we have a county judge. —- that’s why city police can’t go to the county. No one likes to pay taxes period.
Amy…. you apparently do not live in the city. If you did, you would know that people in the city limits also pay COUNTY taxes…. The city police can’t work outside of the city limits but the county sheriff can work inside the city limits if needed…. Maybe you just don’t pay property taxes and that is why you don’t understand…..
agree with the part about not liking to pay taxes but if I do pay a tax would like something in return don’t you
It’s no different than people who don’t have a child in school paying school taxes but we all I’m sure who have a relative who attends school. We all pay taxes on most everything. However the county judge is responsible for the county and the mayor the city. Also a lot of people who live in the city travel county roads at some point and time so you will benefit from paying county taxes!!
I do believe in education for the children that will be a return on my taxes firmly believe in that. but in your way of thinking that I will be driving on county roads I should pay county taxes then you should also believe that you will be driving on city roads should you also pay city taxes ?
Yes I think we should get something in return for paying taxes, especially when someone don’t live in the area. Which I don’t see happening let’s give all the money to ARC – which supports Medical Assistant Treatment. 🙄 – the city shouldn’t have to pay county taxes and the county shouldn’t be affected by the city. People in the county couldn’t vote to make Louisa “wet” just the city people and that’s not right because it affects the county people as well. Only the people that lived in the city could vote on that, which I don’t understand. This town is crooked, I mean look at the sheriff we got. –
A citizen can only hope.
you do know that just across the bridge you could buy all the beer you could want
“MAGA” — the people that lived in the county couldn’t vote against making Louisa “wet” If the county could have voted I would have voted against it. — like I said it affects the county people what the city does.
This subject seems to be hard for some to understand. The city of Louisa is in Lawrence County. Lawrence County is not in the city. Therefore residents of the city should be paying a county tax as well as city. I personally would not want to live within the city limits but that is a personal choice. Anything that comes into Lawrence County helps those the city of Louisa. If more jobs were to come to Lawrence County which I do not see happening, Louisa would also benefit from more residents paying taxes on everything they purchase in Louisa. If a new business came to the city, Lawrence County in general may not benefit at all other than the little amount of county taxes.
can you name one thing that has come into the county of Lawrence county that has helped the city ?
