Building Bridges: Homeschool
Civics Club Meets with KY State Lawmakers

Rep. Scott Sharp, left, and State Senator Phillip Wheeler listen to a presentation during the civics meeting at the Lawrence Co. Public Library.
Lawrence County homeschool teens and their families had the privilege of meeting with state legislators, Senator Phillip Wheeler and Representative Scott Sharp on October 20, 2025 at the Lawrence County Public Library.
Students from the local homeschool civics club, The Iron Patriots, prepared questions on a variety of topics, including homeschooling obstacles, current issues like Al infrastructure, current threats to homeschool freedoms, and how to engage in public policy as young people. The students and legislators even brainstormed new legislation to strengthen homeschool rights in Kentucky. Students and parents shared personal stories about their homeschooling journey, with many families attributing their move from other states to the area’s low state homeschool regulations.

State Rep. Scott Sharp, and State Sen. Phillip Wheeler (on opposite ends of pic) met with the Iron Patriots recently as part of a civics project for homeschoolers.
The legislators answered questions about why they chose to run for office and what the most rewarding and challenging aspects of their jobs are. They even shared their most influential books from childhood: “The Little Engine that Could” (Sen. Wheeler) and “The Candy Bomber” (Rep.Sharp). The visit with the state legislator was an invaluable component of an experiential civics curriculum. Instead of simply reading about the legislative process, students were able to sit down with the very people who write and vote on laws that affect them personally.

It was Pericles, an Athenian statesman, who warned his fellow citizens against political apathy, saying, “Just because you do not take an interest in politics doesn’t mean politics won’t take an interest in you.”
The meeting was facilitated by club leader and newspaper mentor, Lindsay Smith. Smith also chairs the Lawrence County Public Library Board of Trustees. Join The Iron Patriots!
