Both Lawrence Co. teams advance to 15th Regionals @ Pikeville after getting wins on Saturday

Louisa, Ky. — Lawrence Co. Boys and Girls picked up wins on Saturday over Paintsville and Shelby Valley respectively to advance to the quarterfinals of the 15th Region basketball tournament this week in Pikeville.

The Bulldogs ( 20-11 ) went on the road and took care of the Wildcats ( 19-12 ) on Saturday afternoon. 

Sophie Adkins helped Lawrence Co. back to the Appalachian Wireless Arena to defend the title. 

Sophie Adkins led the way with 16 points, Kaison Ward nailed 5 three pointers for her 15 points, Leandra Curnutte tallied 11 points, Abby Nelson netted 9 points, Abby Maynard added 6 points and Jada Patton chipped in with 5 points. 

The Bulldogs connected on 10 three pointers and went 12 for 19 from the free throw line.

The Wildcats were led by Zoee Johnson with 16 points, Lindsey Baldwin 13 points, Sadie Johnson 12 points, Jazzy Meade 8 points, Miley Riddle 5 points. 

Shelby Valley connected on 5 three pointers and went 12 of 14 from the free throw line. 

Lawrence Co. will play Johnson Central ( 27-2 )  at 7:45 on Tuesday in the Appalachian Wireless Arena. The two teams met on February 22nd with the Golden Eagles winning 49-40.

COACH’S COMMENTS

“… Very proud of our girls for battling their way back to the regional tournament. We’ve talked all week about our path being a little different this year but the goal is the same. We are excited about our match up with Johnson Central. We look forward to the opportunity to compete for a regional championship.”

Lawrence Co. 82 Paintsville 62 

When these two teams hooked up a couple weeks ago it was an overtime affair but this time the Dawgs ( 24-7 ) blitzed the Tigers ( 13-20 ) and cruised to the home victory Saturday night. 

Gunnar Woods hit a career high seven 3 pointers on Saturday. 

Gunnar Woods hit 7 three pointers and finished with 23 points, Hayden Perry tallied 17 points, Luke Fetherolf hit 3 three pointers and ended up with 15 points, Andrew Bloomfield added 13 points, Blake Marcum netted 6 points, Logan Ratliff had 5 points and Ford Scaggs chipped in with 3 points. 

The Dawgs hit 14 three pointers and went 10 of 15 from the free throw line. 

Paintsville was led by Jase Kinner with 19 points, Ethan Cole 16 points, Anderson Lauffer 13 points, Brock Woods 8 points, Ethan Ward 6 points. 

The Tigers hit 4 three pointers and went 12 for 14 from the free throw line. 

PHS 15 8 22 17 = 62 

LCHS 21 13 26 22 = 82 

Lawrence Co. will play Pikeville ( 21-4 ) on Wednesday at 6:30 in the Appalachian Wireless Arena. The two teams didn’t meet in the regular season.
