LOUISA, Ky. — Lawrence County BOE members attempted to raise the local property tax rates by a double nickel a year ago and failed miserably.
Now the board is asking for a .04% raise without a public vote according to a legal notice printed in the local newspaper this week.
The BOE usually posts these type announcements in The Lazer but we did not receive this one for some reason.
Anyhow, the notice says the tax rate being asked for is slightly more than the compensating rate for 2026 which is 59.6, and the LC board is asking for 62.0. Last year’s local rate was 58.9 on both real and personal property so the compensating rate would cost the school system money instead of bringing in more.
All this is contingent upon the collection of the taxes as well.
Lawrence Co. Supt. Katie Webb said she is waiting until the public hearing to make any statement on the proposed tax raise.
“The board has not set the new tax rate yet, but it is a topic that will need to be decided in the near future,” Ms. Webb said. “The public hearing on the 28th is where the board will hear all the information, have a public comment time, and then decide on this important matter.”
