KENTUCKY STATE POLICE POST 14 ISSUES PHONE SCAM WARNING
Ashland, Kentucky – (May 20, 2019) The Kentucky State Police, Ashland Post has received several calls pertaining to phone scams. The scammers are posing as the Social Security Administration and contacting individuals demanding payment to cover the costs of their investigation. The callers often call from numbers that appear to be from Pennsylvania on caller ID.
Troopers have determined the calls are actually originating from Sir Lanka and are not prosecutable by local officials.
TIPS: If someone calls asking for money or personal information, hang up. If you think the caller might be telling the truth, call back to a number you know is genuine. Scammers often offer prizes or threaten to take action against you, if you don’t pay a fee or provide your personal information. Legitimate businesses and government agencies will not threaten you for upfront payments.
