The Golden Eagles ( 8-4 ) squeaked by the Dawgs in the semifinals of the Class 2A section 8 tournament at Stonecrest Thursday.

The Dawgs took a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Colin Howard that scored Gray Derifield in the fourth inning.

Colin Howard singled and had one RBI versus Johnson Central.

The Dawgs made it 3-0 just an inning later on a single from Boedy Maynard, an RBI double from Eli Fletcher and a run scoring single from Gray Derifield.

Johnson Central made it 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth before Lawrence Co. added a run in the sixth on a RBI groundout that scored Steven Hall.

Eli Fletcher with a run scoring double against Johnson Central.

The Golden Eagles took the lead for good with a three run sixth inning that was aided by a very controversial call at third base when neither umpire made a call on an obvious Bulldog pickoff at third base.

After Johnson Central took the lead 5-4 the Bulldogs went down in order in the seventh inning.

Braxton Davis pitched well into the sixth inning before tiring and suffered the loss.

The Bulldogs will return home for only the second time this season on Tuesday versus district rival Prestonsburg ( 6-7 ) at 6:30.

Bulldog Head Coach Travis Feltner

COACH’S COMMENTS

“… Against East Carter we had several bats show some signs of coming to life which is a good thing. Tonight’s effort was a good response on a quick turnaround from Thursday night’s 2A game.”

“… We played well in a championship game environment. Great effort on both sides of the ball. Had a couple breaks that went against us and that was the difference.”

“… Winning the 2A was a major goal coming into the season so it is disappointing but we’ve got a lot of ball left and will turn our focus into district play and getting primed to make a deep post season run.”

“… We’ve had another week that I feel our pitching has steadily improved. Boedy ( Maynard ) was tremendous Tuesday night. And Braxton ( Davis ) had a better outing last night against Johnson Central. Eli ( Fletcher ) and Logan ( Whisenant ) continued to show they are going to be a major factor on the mound for us this season into post season.”
