Sheriff Rick Thompson stated that a fugitive that had (9) warrants was arrested last night after a vehicle pursuit that lasted nearly an hour.
Sheriff Thompson stated that the Wayne County Sheriff Drug Enforcement Unit initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle after observing suspicious behavior and also an expired registration. The WV State Police assisted on the stop and pursuit after the vehicle sped up when emergency lights and sirens were activated. The pursuit began in Fort Gay on US RT 52 and ended in Milam Creek in Dunlow after the suspect vehicle became disabled.
The driver, identified as Daniel ‘Dan Dan’ Nelson, then fled on foot. After a short pursuit and brief struggle Daniel was placed in handcuffs. A female stayed in the vehicle and it was discovered that a 7 month old baby was also in the vehicle.
Daniel was charged with Felony Fleeing in a Vehicle, Felony Child Neglect, Battery on a Police Officer, Fleeing on Foot, Obstructing, and Driving while Revoked for DUI from this incident.
Daniel had warrants for Grand Larceny, (2) 3rd Offensive Domestic Battery, a Circuit Court capias, 2nd Offense Domestic Battery or Assault, Domestic Assault, Domestic Battery, 3rd Offense Domestic Battery or Assault, and attempted to commit a misdemeanor.
Sheriff Thompson would like to thank the owners of Dunlow Minimart for coming out to allow officers to fuel their cruisers after the pursuit. Sheriff Thompson stated that he also appreciates the WV State Police and Fort Gay Police Department for assisting in the pursuit.
