First-year Biomedical science student Lincoln Rose continued “Mammie’s Garden” a summer literacy project for children in Lawrence County that he began 3 years ago. According to the Kentucky Department of Education, “Children may lose up to three months of literacy during summer break when they don’t practice what they learned during the school year.” Access to books has been limited by the closure of schools and public libraries due to Covid-19. Lincoln had spent 3 summers as an intern at the Lawrence County Public library where he noticed the importance of book ownership for children. So, with the help of community partners, such as the Louisa Rotary Club, Ollie’s Bargain Outlet and others the project was able to collect 920 new books. The books were distributed to children in Blaine, Fallsburg, and Louisa.
What an awesome young man! Great story, pleas have more stories like this instead of people arrested. Go LC!
What an amazing young man, you truly are a leader in your community. John C. Maxwell said, “A leader knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” What better way to give back to your to your community than giving knowledge. The knowledge you are giving to these students will last them forever. You truly are an amazing person.
