“It’s new that’s for sure, there’s something different,” Dent said. “We’ve just got to figure out how to do the best we can.” The best with what former mayor Joetta Hatfield and Recorder Sheila Preston Bowen left after being charged with theft from city accounts.
“It’s a role, I think, that fits me well.” Councilmen Wayne Cyrus said. “I’m the athletic director of our local high school, so paperwork is kind of what I enjoy doing, and I’ll stay on top of it,”.
This leaves two open council positions and will be addressed in the next Special meeting.
Cyrus welcomes all who are interested to come to him or Mayor Dent.
This comes after the charges and arrests of the town’s previous Mayor Joetta Hatfield and Town Recorder and Treasurer Shelia Bowen. They have both been charged with embezzlement with fraudulent schemes. They both allegedly worked together in embezzling over $200,000 since 2016 by paing personal bills with city money.
The next Town Hall meeting is Dec. 17th at 6 pm at the Fort Gay Town Hall.
