LAWRENCE COUNTY TRIO, ALONG WITH SIX OTHERS, INDICTED BY JOHNSON COUNTY GRAND JURY ON CHARGES STEMMING FROM FAILED ESCAPE ATTEMPT
DECEMBER 30, 2018 – written by WADE QUEEN
A Johnson County grand jury indicted nine individuals accused of attempting to dig through a wall of the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center in October of this year. Of those unlucky nine inmates indicted, three are dubiously from from Lawrence County.
Additionally, all but one of the inmates as part of the indictments were also stuck with persistent felony offenders charges..
According to a press release statement from Big Sandy Regional Detention Center Administrator F.D. “Pete” Fitzpatrick, the nine inmates named in the indictments attempted to dig a hole in the cinder block wall of a shower room with two pieces of metal from a nearby shelving unit.
The hole was said to be 18 inches by 12 inches when it was discovered by jail employees on October 15.
Fitzpatrick has stated also in previous interviews that he believes that had the hole not been discovered, and if the inmate gang had gotten their next shower room time just one more, they would have likely succeeded in by breaking the hole big enough to crawl through and escape
The names of the inmates and the grand jury charges are:
Robbie Lee Prater, 37, from Langley, Kentucky.
Curtis Dale Rowe, 43 from Louisa.
Jeffrey Lee Stanley, 44, from Prestonsburg, Kentucky
Shannon Lee Jude, 42, from Louisa.
Keith Anthony Penix Jr., 28, from Louisa.
Justin Derek Combs, 33, from Wittensville, Kentucky.
John Douglas May, 51, from Salyersville, Kentucky.
Daniel Edwin Bell, 34, from Paintsville, Kentucky.
James Garrett Ison, 44, from Isonville. Kentucky.
All nine inmates were charged at the time of the jail escape attempt, pending the indictments handed down last week.
All nine inmates were indicted on charges of first-degree criminal mischief for the property damage and second-degree attempted escape, according to court documents.
Curtis Rowe, Prater, Keith Penix, James Ison, Daniel Bell, Justin Combs and Shannon Jude were each charged as first-degree persistent felony offenders and John May charged as a second-degree persistent felony offender.
The inmates face additional sentences of one to five years and a fine of no more than $10,000 if convicted on the class D felonies of first-degree criminal mischief and second-degree attempted escape, with even many more years of prison time added on the sentences if the persistent felony charges are enforced.
Wade’s view) —
After further research, it is with absolutely mind-staggering the total criminal history on these nine inmates, going back across over nearly 17 years (January 2002), as total number of times these nine were arrested came to 220, on several HUNDRED criminal charges!
And that is only going back to the beginning of 2002. Most of the nine appear to have already well established criminal records before 2002, before the vast public internet databases of personal crime history of nearly all of those who had their arrests started to be collected.
