RED WAVE HITS LAWRENCE CO. AS FIVE INCUMBENTS SHOWN THE DOOR BY VOTERS…
NOVEMBER 6, 2018 – written by WADE QUEEN
LOUISA, KY. — A red wave has apparently swept over in this local area, as local Republicans in Lawrence County are in deep rejoice as they celebrate in the near clean sweep of the local offices that were up for vote (several incumbents including County Attorney Mike Hogan, Clerk Chris Jobe, PVA Chris Rose had no opposition.
incumbents were kicked out of their offices in Lawrence County, as a reported 5,548 Lawrence County residents out of 12,725 registered voters went to the polls. Today’s election turnout total percentage numbers for Lawrence County was 43.6%.
In 2 of the most anticipated races in the county, for the county judge office and the sheriff office, both Republican candidates won, with one very close as expected, and the other one a was surprising blowout easy win
In the race for Lawrence County judge/Executive, former judge Phillip Carter is back in power as he defeated the man that beat him 8 years ago, two term incumbent Democrat county judge John Osborne, in a vote that was very close as everyone expected.
Carter beat Osborne by 112 votes in total tally of 2,769 to 2,657.
In the other highly anticipated hot county race for the sheriff’s office, which was brought on by the retirement of current sheriff Garrett Roberts, who is finishing 4 terms (16 years), the contest was between 2 of his current deputies. Democrat Chief Deputy Mark Wheeler, and Republican (and current sergeant) Chuck Jackson.
In what many in the county thought would be an extremely close contest, was instead a landslide victory by Jackson, as he beat Wheeler by 1,361 votes, in a total vote tally of 3,389 to 2,028.
“I am truly humbled by the support today from the people of Lawrence County,” Jackson told The Lazer.
Also 2 out the 4 Lawrence County Magistrates were voted out office with incumbent Morris Howard defeated by Michael ‘Mouse’ Halcomb’, and incumbent John Lemaster defeated by John Skaggs. Republican David Pinson defeated Lorie Blevins in a run to see who would take the place of Earl Boggs who did not seek re-election.
Only Magistrate Rick Blackburn won his re-election, easily defeating challenger Bobby Rose by a vote total of 1,040 to 364.
The magistrate district 2 race the nail biter in the county as John Skaggs winning by the skin on his teeth, incumbent John Lemaster, by just 7 votes, in total vote tally of 725 to 718.
Louisa mayor Harold Slone cruised to his second win in as many tries for the mayor’s position. He defeated former Supt. Eddie Michael 493-272. There were six candidates for city council for six seats so everybody won including newcomer Gary Robertson, Tom Parsons, Matt Brown, John Nolan, Mitch Castle and Lisa Schaeffer.
In the lone bright spot for Democrats locally, we have a new Kentucky State Representative, as Democrat Kathy Hinkle defeated incumbent Republican Jill York, in the race for the 96th House district, in a wild outcome, as each candidate won their opponent’s home county, with Jill York beating Kathy Hinkle in Hinkle’s home county of Lawrence County by 242 votes, in a total tally of 2,812 to 2,570. But Jill York was defeated by Kathy Hinkle in York’s home county of Carter County by 247 votes in total vote tally of 4,566 to 4,319.
But in the most shocking outcome, Hinkle defeated York by just 5 votes. The total vote tally in the 96th district race was 7,136 to 7,131.
If this ends up the official final vote count tally, it is most likely the results will be challenged in a re-canvas, especially on the absentee ballots.

Congratulations to all candidates!! Of all the winners I’m most happy that Chuck Jackson won sheriff.
Finally the dirty deeds that has been happening in that office comes to an end.
voting for Chuck Jackson was a mistake he isn’t going to fix the drug heads in lawrence county he will just let them run free that is why we have so many people dying in this world because the law does not want to make the county a better place.
To be honest I don’t understand why on earth you could say Chuck isn’t going to change anything and Mark would. Other than walking around town with his chest stuck out and nose in the air I never saw Mark do anything. He ran around screaming he was going to stop the druggies but it was to get votes, why did he need to be Sheriff to do that, he could have helped the process as a Deputy. I think Chuck will be a great Sheriff and at least he is personable and has a genuine interest in the people of the county. All Mark does is stomp around like a giant toddler and demand things be done how he sees fit. Congrats Chuck and I’m sure you will do a wonderful job.
Very happy to see Chuck win the Sheriffs race. He deserved it and I believe he will be a great Sheriff. Congrats Chuck
