A fatal fire case from early last week that has been under investigation has taken a disturbing turn, after murder and arson charges have been filed against a man accused in the incident that ended with a death and a home burned to the ground in Fort Gay, West Virginia.

Daryl Alan Riggs, 19, of Genoa, West Virginia; has been charged with second-degree murder and arson following an incident that was reported in the 2100 block of Mill Creek Road on Monday,October 28, according to Wayne County magistrate court documents. The court documents stated that Daryl Riggs made a confession to police relating to the death of Robert Estepp, 65, of Fort Gay, West Virginia; on Sunday, November 3.

According to the West Virginia State Fire Marshal’s Office, the remains of Robert Estepp were found inside the burned home.

During an interview with law enforcement, Daryl Riggs described the situation that ended deadly as a “drug deal gone bad”.

Daryl Riggs told officers that Robert Estepp pulled out a knife during their encounter along Mill Creek Road, but that Dary Riggs claimed that he managed to kick the knife out of Robert Estepp’s hand after being cut by him.

Officers stated in the court documents Daryl Riggs had a cut on his left hand and thumb.

Daryl Riggs then admitted to  ‘slicing’ Roberty Estep three or four times around the lower abdomen before taking off.

According to the criminal complaint, when police investigators asked about Robert Estepp’s home burning after the incident, Daryl Riggs responded to them by saying, “Oh yeah, I did have to do that. I came back to burn the house down because I was scared”, officers said.

Daryl Riggs admitted to the officers that he set the back porch of the home on fire with a lighter.

After his confession and magistrate court arraignment, Daryl Riggs was taken to and lodged in the Western Regional Jail in Barboursville in Cabell County; where he is being held on no bond allowed.
