Allen was born on December 19, 1939 in Williamson, West Virginia to the late Woodrow Jennings Holbrook and Ruby Smith Holbrook.
A 1959 Lawrence County High School graduate, Allen played football for four years. He also attended Ashland Community College. Allen was a lifelong Kentucky basketball fan. Allen was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served with the 11th Air Assault Division at Fort Benning, Georgia from 1962-1964. Allen is also a designated Kentucky Colonel.

Allen successfully operated the company until his retirement in 1996. When Allen bought our farm, it was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. He poured his heart in to transforming it by building ponds, stocking fish, and building a hunting cabin for our family and friends to enjoy. Along with this, he had the usual farm animals and always had an abundant garden that he shared with family and friends.
Allen was a devoted husband and father that support and took good care of his family. In addition to his parents, Allen was preceded in death by his son Gregory Allen Holbrook; a brother Jack Holbrook; and two sisters Janet Smith and Remona Williams.
Allen is survived by his wife of sixty years, Melissa Burke Holbrook; daughters Kemberly Walsh and MeLinda Edmond; four grandsons; two granddaughters; three great-granddaughters; and two great-grandsons.
