Winchester, Ky. — Lawrence County sent three to the Golf state tournament and Senior Reece Hughes came up just short in his bid to make the final round earlier this week at Winchester Country Club.

Reece Hughes shot a 77 and was just outside the final 15 to make it into the final round.

There were 8 teams from regions 9-12 and an additional 40 qualifiers participating. A total of about 80 golfers. The top 3 teams and top 15 individuals not on those teams adjacent to the final round of the state tournament.

Winchester Country Club is a tight tree-lined course that is difficult. It is a par 72. Mikey Akers, Ashton West and Reece Hughes played really well.

Mikey Akers shot an 83 in the state tournament earlier this week. Reece a 77.

We knew the cut line was probably going to be between 76-78. After Reece Hughes finished they had wait for the final groups to finish and the scores to come in. A couple of players birdied 18 and that ended up bumping Reece out of the top 15.

Senior Ashton West shot a 85 in the first round of the state tournament.

Bulldog Head Coach Jackie Holt

COACH’S COMMENTS

“…Very proud of these young men. I hope they now understand why I put together a very challenging schedule with so many tournaments. I think it paid off because when they got to the region and state tournament, they played at high levels and knew they belonged there with the best in the state.”

“… The four seniors Tylan, Ashton, Mikey, and Reece accomplished things this year that no other golf team at LCHS has done before. I believe Reece was the first ever LCHS golfer to win the region individually. And I also believe this was the first time LCHS sent three participants to the state tournament. And we barely missed out by one shot from being the first team from LCHS to qualify for the state tournament.”

“…These four young men provided the blueprint and example to the younger golfers of what it takes to compete at this level. I’m excited about the future of the LCHS golf program and cannot wait to roll our sleeves up and get back to work.”
