Kentucky Power Winter Update
Friday, December 23, 12:30 p.m.
Weather
Extremely cold temperatures will continue throughout the day through Christmas. Wind chills of -15°F to -30°F are still expected with wind gust possibly starting this afternoon into the evening of 40-50 mph.
Summary
Extreme cold and strong winds continue to be the biggest threat for outages. The dangerously cold temperatures are a concern for customers, so everyone is urged to make a plan. Crews will be working through the holiday weekend to get everyone restored as quickly as possible.
Outages and Estimated Restoration
While there were 3,500 customers experiencing outages this morning, crews have already decreased that number down to 2200. By tomorrow night, crews estimate 95 percent of restoration will be complete if the weather, particularly the wind gusts, do no produce additional outages.
Storm Response Efforts
Kentucky Power personnel and business partners have been working the current outages since early this morning and will continue to assess damage and restore power as it is safe to do so.
Customer Safety Information
What to do if an outage occurs:
- Stay away from sparking equipment or downed lines or anything they may touch. This goes for children and pets too.
- Never remove debris that’s within 10 feet of a power line.
- Unplug major appliances to protect them when power comes back on.
- Leave a light switch turned on so you know when power is restored.
- Refuel heaters, lamps and generators outside, and away from any flames or sparks. Wipe up fuel spills immediately.
- Let us know if you’re using a generator – this protects you and our line workers as they work to restore power.
- Never operate lanterns, heaters or fuel-fired stoves without proper ventilation.
- Never burn charcoal indoors. It releases poisonous carbon monoxide.
- Don’t let children carry candles or oil lamps.
