Saturday, July 9, 2016 was a “FUN” day for Fort Gay neighborhoods!
An event called, “Fun Day in Fort Gay,” was the special occasion. This event has been hosted for the past 4 years by the Fort Gay Neighborhood Association and is located on the front lawn of the old Fort Gay High School, right in the center of town.
The association collects donations from area businesses, local politicians, organizations, and churches to help sponsor the event. This year was reported to be the biggest yet!
Some new activities added this year included the “hotdog eating contest” with James Keeton as the winner, and the “watermelon eating contest” with Darren Ferguson as the winner.
#RISEabove and Addiction Recovery Care hosted a cornhole & basketball shooting contest with the winner from each receiving a filled water-gun! Shawn Cook & Matt Brown were the adult winners and Autumn Block and Shawn Dean were the youth winners.
There were several church bands that sang and played music.
Local groups grilled hotdogs, served sno-cones, and popped popcorn. Everything at the event was FREE! Inflatables for the kids to enjoy, carnival games to play, and a bicycle giveaway made for a great time for kids and their parents!
There were 26 brand new bicycles donated for this event.
The attendance for the night was estimated to be about 300, with 150 of those being kids under the age of 17. Everyone is looking forward to next year’s event! One of the participants, Marvin Rose stated, “I had a good fellowship with the people, listening to the music, watching the kids play. It was a great time for the community to get out and enjoy themselves without spending a lot of money.”
