Winter Storm Blair Restoration Update
January 6, 2025, 6:00 p.m.
Weather
Winter Storm Blair impacted Kentucky Power’s service area beginning yesterday afternoon with snow, ice and rain causing damage to trees and electrical equipment. At the peak of the storm, there were 10,735 customers without power. Snow continued to fall across eastern Kentucky throughout the afternoon. Winter weather conditions are expected to persist through the early morning.
Summary
Currently, 6,609 customers are without power this evening with 209 individual outage cases. Outages are spread across Kentucky Power’s service area with the majority being in the following counties: Johnson (1,654), Morgan (699), Martin (967), Floyd (577) and Pike (741). Approximately 30 additional outage cases were reported throughout the day.
Storm Response Efforts
It is anticipated that more than 95% of storm restorations will be complete by tomorrow night. Kentucky Power has nearly 1,000 personnel, business partners and external resources working to restore power for our customers. Workers include hundreds of mutual assistance crews from in and out-of-state who began arriving yesterday.
Crews are reporting fallen trees as the main cause for many broken poles and downed lines. Ongoing precipitation and difficult road conditions have slowed restoration efforts in some remote and mountainous areas where truck access is limited and manual work is required.
Stay Safe
- Be aware that downed power lines may be buried in snow cover. If you see a downed line, call 911 and Kentucky Power immediately at 1-800-572-1113 to report.
- If you use a portable or RV generator, do not plug the generator into your circuit box for the safety of our lineworkers. Check our website for generator safety tips and more information at KentuckyPower.com/Safety.
