KYTC District 12 Battles First Snow and Ice Storm of 2025
Black ice, downed trees, and stuck vehicles cause travel impacts
PIKEVILLE, Ky. (Jan.06, 2025) –The Eastern Kentucky counties of Pike, Johnson, Martin, Floyd, Knott, Lawrence and Letcher continue to face the challenges brought by the first major snow and ice storm of 2025. KYTC District 12 crews worked tirelessly throughout the night to combat heavy snow accumulations, which exceeded seven inches in some areas.
Sunday evening introduced a mix of freezing rain, thunder, and lightning, creating additional hazards. This combination caused slushy roads that quickly turned to ice as temperatures remained well below freezing. Despite the conditions, crews made progress clearing Priority A routes during brief weather breaks.
This morning, the situation remains hazardous as crews contend with downed trees and power lines across multiple routes, further complicating travel. Adding to the challenge, the Jackson Weather Service predicts an additional 1-2 inches of snow throughout the day, along with wind gusts of up to 25 miles per hour. These winds may cause further drifting snow and potential damage to trees and power lines, increasing travel risks.
Road clearing efforts are ongoing, but non-essential travel is strongly discouraged to ensure public safety and allow our teams room to work effectively.
KYTC District 12 urges residents to stay informed and avoid traveling until conditions improve. Please monitor our updates and road conditions through KYTC District 12’s social media channels and SnowKY.ky.gov.
