Winter Storm Blair Preparations
January 4, 2025, 3:00 p.m.
Weather
Kentucky Power is closely monitoring a wintry weather system set to impact our service area starting Sunday, Jan. 5. The system is expected to arrive by midday Sunday and continue through Monday. Currently, the primary risk to electrical utilities is moderate ice accumulation of 0.25 to 0.50 inches which could cause power outages in temperatures that are not expected to exceed freezing for the next week.
Storm Preparations
Our crews are loaded up and ready to restore power as quickly and safely as possible. We want to ensure our customers are prepared as well, especially considering the cold temperatures. Being prepared ahead of time is crucial for keeping your home and family safe.
Review all our safety tips for what to do before, during and after the storm at KentuckyPower.com/Safety.
- Kentucky Power advises anyone using oxygen or in-home medical devices that require electricity or medications that must be refrigerated to have a backup plan in case outages occur.
- Check on the elderly and those with children or medical conditions to ensure they have a safety plan in place.
- Charge devices such as phones, laptops, portable chargers and other electronics to stay connected.
- Prepare an emergency kit for cold weather situations. At a minimum include water, blankets, sleeping bags, non-perishable food, a can opener, flashlights, batteries, a battery-powered radio, first-aid supplies and necessary medications. More emergency kit information is available on ourwebsite.
- If using a generator, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and do not operate indoors. Connect appliances directly to the generator not to your home’s main panel unless an electric load transfer switch is installed. This ensures the safety of utility workers. Additional safety tips for generator use can be found here.
