The Lawrence County Youth Football League sweeps their northern neighbor, the Ashland Tomcats. The young Bulldogs went 4-0 on the day Saturday. This was the first game of the regular season, and the Bulldogs made a statement!
The D team started the day off with a 14-6 win over the Tomcats. The Bulldogs started off on defense, but they quickly went to offense as Dossen Sturgell forced a fumble on the 2nd play of the game. The D team started off early with a 20-yard Gentry Bowen touchdown. Bowen also added the 2-point conversion, making the score 8-0 early in the first quarter. Tomcats got on the board with a late 2nd quarter touchdown, but the bulldogs defense got a big stop on the 2-point conversion to keep the score 8-6 at the half. Merrick Mills added a 38-yard touchdown in the 2nd half, and the defense held strong the final minutes.
Up next was the C-team Bulldogs. These young Bulldogs were not messing around. The Bulldogs marched 65 yards in 7 plays with Eli Block scoring from 2 yards out. Colton Bentley tacked on the 2-point conversion, making the score 8-0 early in the first quarter. After Ashland went 3 and out, Colton Bentley hit Eli Block for a 65-yard catch and run for a touchdown. Tyson Muncy added the 2-point conversion, putting the score at 16-0 in the first quarter.
On third down of the next possession, Cory Keeton picks off the Ashland qb and almost returns it for a touchdown. The first play the Bulldogs were on offense, Bentley hit Keeton for a 13-yard touchdown pass. This brought the score to 22-0 in the first quarter. Korbyn Dawson and Noah Young both had long runs that set up a 9-yard touchdown pass from Bentley to Lawson Blevins. Bentley added the 2-point conversion, bringing the score to 30-0 in the 2nd quarter. #5 for Ashland took a 3rd down snap 58 yards in for a Tomcat touchdown to make the score 30-6.
Two plays later, Bentley took the snap and raced 64 yards for a Bulldogs touchdown. David West added the 2-point conversion to bring the score 38-6. After Blake Lemaster had a big 3rd down tackle, Zayne Powell had a big 30-yard run. Ryder Endicott took the next snap and went 25 yards but was brought down on the 1-yard line. Endicott took the next snap in for a Bulldogs touchdown. After the failed conversion, the score was 44-6. Noah Young added a late touchdown for the Bulldogs. Dawson ran in the 2-point conversion to set the final score at 52-6.
The B-team Bulldogs were up next. The B-team Bulldogs got on the board early with a 45-yard touchdown by Brayson Raines on the 6th play of the game. Tucker Muncy hit Lucas Block for the 2-point conversion to make it 8-0 early in the first quarter. Penalties stalled the next drive for the Bulldogs. After a defensive stop, the bulldogs had 12 seconds remaining in the half. Muncy threw a bomb to Tucker Dixon for an 80-yard touchdown. The conversion failed and set the score at 14-0 at half. Midway through the third quarter, Block breaks one free for a 28-yard touchdown; Jaxon Chafin added the 2-point conversion to bring the score to 22-0 in the 3rd quarter. With 22 seconds remaining in the 3rd quarter, Muncy hit Block for a 49-yard touchdown catch. Isaac Sturgell added the 2-point conversion, bringing the score to 30-0. Blaine Williams tacked on a 2-yard touchdown run and Colten Anderson added the 2-point conversion. This set the final score at 38-0.
The last game of the day, after several lightening delays, matched up the two A-teams. Both teams came in with a lot of hype. The Bulldogs would strike first with Carson Evans running in from 9 yards out for the touchdown. Jayce Napier added the two-point conversion putting the score 8-0 early in the 2nd quarter. After the defense forced a punt, Levi Hensley had an amazing catch and run down to the 1-yard line to set up a Carson Evans touchdown run the very next play. Napier again added the 2-point conversion which brought the score to 16-0. Lincoln Parsley recovered a fumble on the 2nd play of the next drive and gave the Bulldogs great field position. Evans hit Brother Fitzpatrick on a long pass to set up the Bulldogs first and goal from the 6-yard line. Napier tacked on another score and Evans the 2-point conversion, bringing the score to 24-0.#8 for Ashland would break a long touchdown run the next possession, but they were denied for the two-point conversion. At the half the score was 24-6. Keagan Muncy would rumble in from 3 yards out early in the third quarter, and Levi Hensley would add the 2-point conversion making it 32-6. Hensley would add a 4th quarter touchdown and Evans would tack on the 2-point conversion making the score 40-6. The Tomcats would add on a score late in the 4th quarter to set our final score at 40-12 Bulldogs.
Next week the Bulldogs travel to Chesapeake, Ohio to face the Panthers. This is Chesapeake’s first season back in the Tri-State Youth Football League after taking a few years away. The schedule for this weekend is A-team at 10:00, B-team at 11:15, C-team at 12:30, and D-team at 2:15.
