The Bulldogs went 15-13 last season with a 58th District title, and beat Paintsville and Pikeville before falling to Johnson Central in the 15th Region championship game.

Lawrence County returns Sophomore Jada Patton who averaged 15.9 points per game and 6.0 rebounds per contest, Junior Maddison Artrip made 50 three pointers and averaged 6.8 points per game and 4.4 rebounds, Sophomore Emalynn Kitts 2.0 and 1.7 boards per game.

Juniors Caroline See and Lilly Fitzpatrick along with Freshman Jenna Murphy and 8th Grader Gracie Woods will all be asked to do a little more this season.

Lady Bulldog Senior

The lone Senior is Martin Co. transfer Brooke Marcum who isn’t eligible to play just yet. Marcum is a point guard who averaged 15.0 points per game and 5.0 rebounds per contest for MCHS last season. She also made 32 three pointers and shot 68.1 from the free throw line.

Lady Bulldog Sophomores

Addison Bowen, Jada Patton, Emalynn Kitts

The Bulldogs will play in a tournament in Tennessee around Christmas and will host the Class 2A Section 8 tournament right after the new year this season.

The 58th District will be highly competitive once again this season with Betsy Layne, Floyd Central and Prestonsburg.

The Bulldogs lost three seniors off of last year’s squad including 2,000 point scorer Sophie Adkins who is now playing at UPike. They also lost Abby Maynard who is playing soccer at Alice Lloyd and Addison Bloomfield.

Lawrence County will open up the season at home on Tuesday December 2nd against Belfry.

Bulldog Senior Brooke Marcum

“…Honestly I feel like I fit right in with the girls a lot better than I did at Martin County just because of the style of play. We play a lot quicker than at Martin County who liked to slow it down. More fast paced here which is a big change but I think it fits the way I like to play. It is a lot different but a good different. I’m really excited to get transfer stuff out of the way and really get going with my new teammates.”

“…It was a huge difference for all of us from the first scrimmage to the second scrimmage. I was really nervous the first one and that felt more comfortable against Lewis County. We have had to get used to each other and the more we do that the better off we will be.”

“… I knew Maddison Artrip couple shoot the ball and Emalynn plays so hard and Jada Patton is a great athlete, who can run and jump and beat everyone down the floor for easy baskets. I’m really excited for the upcoming season.”

Bulldog Sophomore Emalynn Kitts

“… After we scrimmaged Knott Co. Central we came back in and knew what we needed to work on. We have pushed each other to get better as a team and I thought we played better against Lewis County.”

“… It is always good to see someone different across from you and them not know what plays we are running after seeing are teammates in practice everyday. Both teams we scrimmaged played a different style and they will be good for us once the season starts. We saw a team with guards and the Lewis Co. had a girl that was really tall and we had to play different.”

“… Brooke has fit in nicely so far, she is our point guard and has stepped right in and gave us a boost. She can get to the basket, she can shoot. I think everyone has improved and gotten stronger from last season and now we just have to put it together. I’m excited to get going.”

Bulldog Head Coach Melinda Feltner

COACH’S COMMENTS

“… This group is hungry, they come out every single day and work extremely hard. We are young in a lot of spots, and have some holes to fill but they work their tails off and show last year wasn’t a fluke. They want to prove themselves to everyone in the region. We had a great run to end the year and these girls are eager to build on that.”

“… The two scrimmages gave us two completely different looks and that is exactly what we needed. Knott Central was more guards and Lewis Co. had a girl 6-3 who was a surprise for us to see. We got exactly what we wanted out of both games. We have tons to work on but their attitudes have been great and that is what I like.”

“… I think all of them are stronger and quicker than last season and those changes alone allows us to be more physical and getting the experience of playing in big games last season was huge for them. They will step into bigger roles this season and I think they are up for the challenge.”

“… Our schedule is challenging once again and our District overall will be good once again. We are going to Tennessee around Christmas and hosting the 2A tournament which is always competitive. The girls wanted to get back to Owensboro that was a fun trip. These girls have goals and we talked about them and they told me win 20 games, win the 2A, win another District title, and they want to play in Rupp Arena again. They have lofty goals but they have worked hard and they want it for themselves.”
