ACTC Science Fair Celebrates Youth Projects
The future is bright for our region according to the abilities shown by students at the 5th annual ACTC/FIVCO Science and Engineering Fair February 3. The fair coordinated by Ashland Community and Technical College showcased 124 science projects that ranged from making electricity to cleaning grease stains.
“My students really enjoyed the activities,” said Carmella Rose, a seventh grade teacher at Louisa Middle School. “They learn a lot about the science process, and they like working on projects.
“We have been participating since the second year of the fair, and we keep winning,” Rose added. “Someone has placed every time we have come.”
This year, Paylin Meek won first place in the Middle School Math, Engineering and Computer Sciences category; and Luke Johnson won third place in the Middle School Physics and Astronomy Category.
“This fair helps students with practical problem solving skills, and these skills can them all through life,” said Craig McDavid, the fourth and fifth grade science teacher a Fallsburg Elementary School. “This is his fifth year of participating in the fair because it’s a great opportunity for our students to explore science and see what other students in other schools are doing.”
Kaesin Ward from Blaine Elementary School won second place in the Elementary School Chemistry category. Sarah Preece from Blaine Elementary won third place in the Middle School Math, Engineering, & Computer Science category.
Lawrence County High School students also volunteered to work in the various labs, like making slime and models of molecules using marshmallows.
Those different areas of science explored at the fair were Biomedical & Behavioral Health; Animal, Plant & Environmental; Math, Engineering & Computers; Chemistry; and Physics & Anatomy.
First, second and third place awards were given in each category. All award winners in the middle and high school categories as well as the elementary grand prize and grand prize runner-up are eligible to enter the Regional Science and Engineering Fair held at Northern Kentucky University.
The fair at ACTC’s Technology Drive Campus had entries from 45 schools and home schools representing all FIVCO counties.
“This year’s event was a result of the continuous support of our volunteers, teachers, and students who are committed to student success,” said Mia Brown, Fair Director. “A special thanks goes to our sponsors Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, Inc., Kings Daughter Medical Center, Marathon Petroleum Company and Big Sandy Superstore.”
