HIGHWAY DISTRICT 12 – January 29, 2017 5:30 p.m. — Plows are working on US 119 in Pike County as this message is being prepared (see photo above). This is the first area today that has enough accumulation to plow. However, it appears the snow is here. How much? Yet to be seen. Remember, we cannot get down to black pavement until the snowfall stops. We treat and plow while the snow is falling, and afterward, but you won’t see black pavement until the snowfall is over.
Crews from all 10 maintenance garages in D12’s seven counties were called out at 1 o’clock this afternoon to monitor, patrol, and spot treat. Other than US 119 in Pike County, there is not enough accumulation yet to plow anywhere else in the district.
These crews will stay out until midnight and, if necessary, depending on snowfall and accumulation, another shift will report at midnight.
Temperature are dropping, expected to be in the mid-20s tonight, which means there could be some icy spots early tomorrow morning.
If you are on the road now, get to where you need to be for the night as soon as you can. Snow squalls (didn’t last long) have been reported in Knott County, limiting visibility. As it gets dark, driving could be tricky in this weather.
Buckle up, stay warm, and be safe out there!
