FRANKFORT, Ky. (WSAZ) — For Kentucky consumers, there’s a possibility that shopping might be a little more expensive in a little over a year.
Rep. John Sims Jr. (D-Flemingsburg) is sponsoring a bill that would raise sales tax to eight percent starting January 2021. If it passes, it would be the first sales tax increase since 1990.
The bill would also raise personal property tax to six percent and motor vehicle usage tax up to eight percent.
Small business owners in eastern Kentucky say that the increase in sales tax, along with a possible minimum wage increase that is also making its way through the Kentucky House of Representatives, could really hurt them.
“If you come here and we raise prices, the people who buy product off us have to raise prices and then what’s to say that the person they’re selling to isn’t just going to order off line from somewhere that’s not as expensive,” said Corey Stinson, who works at Tri-State Vinyl and Supplies in Greenup County. “So it’s just going to hurt the local small businesses in the area.”
The house bill has been referred to the Kentucky House Appropriations and Revenue Committee.
If sales tax goes to 8% we should be like Tenn and have no income tax
Totally agree!!
We have a 10.5% sales tax in TN Jim, and a 10% sales tax on food, but no state income tax. This way the dope addicts and other riffraff pay into the system.
Please vote no can’t afford any more tax raise
I think we have had enough raises. When you are on a fixed income I can barley make ends meet. I’m on disability and we hardly get a raise because local taxes go up. There is no way aperson can ever have a paid off l
house because personal property taxes are $150. Per month alone. We need no more taxes.
I don’t mind a sales tax increase because I will have a choice to buy something or not unless they start taxing food again
unlike the property tax I have to pay every year to the county and get absolutely nothing back
KAG, I doubt you pay taxes of any kind!
there you go again 95%
but my cousins pay tax charles
Charley $39,300 and $1,000,000
that’s a big difference lot’s of fingers and toes
like I said 95% is about right
Peggy, in KY people on social security or social security disability don’t pay property taxes? County or City.
again you are wrong people do pay property taxes if you are on SS or SSDI
again another one of your 95%
city included
No KAG, people on SS or SSDI DO NOT pay property tax city or county in Kentucky, unless they own more than one residence, or its value is over a million dollars. Things you wont have to worry about!
Wrong Charles. People who retire on SS pay property tax just the same as those who retired from a public company or government job. I know we do, anyway.

The Homestead Exemption under the law states exactly what I said. You are wrong, and I do expect an apology.

After reading further the amount is $39,300, so I am sorry, to the extent I am wrong, I ask for the same as it relates to your inaccurate statement.
In KY you have ELECTED PVA’s, so many property’s are taxed at a far lesser value than their actual value. PVA’s want to be re-elected. I would wager few homes in Louisa, or LC are valued at more than $39,300. It has went on for years.
This is a poor article. It doesn’t state why the tax increase is needed. It takes a lot of courage to propose a tax increase from the position of an elected office. There must be a valid reason for the request. Why is it needed? Republicans have been in complete control of Kentucky government until the last recent election. Republicans still control everything except the Governor’s office. Have they run up a bill that we don’t have the money to pay?
If you put this tax in place then remove the tax that has been imposed on the people doing a service Ie: lawn service, window cleaning etc
What did I tell you people ? The taxes are going up ! The teachers unions have elected Joseph Stalin .
because Bevin’s has left over a billion dollar shortfall you see in KY unlike the federal gov they have to pass a balanced budget it’s in there constitution
Why don’t you try that again KAG, in English this time!
again nothing about the FACTS
You’re right, Joe. Thanks teachers.
Just like a democrat to raise taxes this is what will happen to the whole United States if a democratic socialist becomes president every candidate has already stated this is what will happen all I can say Donald Trump 4 more years.
TRUMP 2020! 🙂
👍
What happen to all the money that the state was to get from the lottery Watch they will raise taxes then give themselves a raise
Pam, I doubt the KY sales tax will go up, calm down. This was introduced by two Dems, its now in committee. Most bills die in committee pam. As long as you vote Republican you will be OK.
