Martha Frances Roberts “Marty” Thompson, 90 of Ravenswood, WV, beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed peacefully on her way to heaven Saturday, September 30, 2023.
She was born November 19, 1932 in Fallsburg, KY to the late Webb Roberts and Thelma Ball Roberts. She was a graduate of Fallsburg High School and St. Mary’s School of Nursing, Huntington, WV, where she received her Registered Nursing, R.N. degree. Marty was a surgical nurse at King’s Daughters Hospital in Ashland, KY, an Emergency Room nurse at Jackson General Hospital in Ripley, WV, an LPN instructor at Arch Moore Vocational Technical school in Spencer, WV and was the Director of Nursing at the Ravenswood, WV Care Center where she helped design the new Care Center.
She was an avid camper, primarily at her sister Mackie’s campground in Fallsburg, KY and traveled extensively with her husband, Herbert, visiting all 50 states. Marty was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Fallsburg, KY and attended the First United Methodist Church in Ravenswood, WV. She was a three-time Eagle Scout Mom and actively participated in behind the scenes Scouting activities.
Marty was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert E. “Ponnie” Thompson. She was the oldest daughter of nine children and was preceded in death by two brothers, Willis Roberts, Freeman Roberts and two sisters, Lora “Cookie” Reynolds and Maxine Lucille “Mackie” Crum.
She is survived by her four loving children, Michael Eugene Thompson (Ginger) of Lexington, KY, Herbert Gregory Thompson (Jennifer) of Columbus, GA, Lisa Dean Thompson Hellyer (Chet) of New Carlisle, OH and David Webb Thompson (Matthew) of Columbus, OH.
Eight grandchildren, Jason Gregory Thompson (Rebecca), Rebecca Hope McKinney (Tate) both of Columbus, GA, Lyndsay Michelle Klapheke (Thomas) of Lexington, KY, Joshua Michael Thompson (Gabriella) of Louisville, KY, Rachel Francis Hellyer (Danny) of Hebron, IN, Chad Dean Hellyer of Ravenswood, WV, Hunter Stephen Thompson (Kayla) of Lexington, KY, and Molly Lynn Hellyer of Columbus, OH.
Twelve great grandchildren, Kaitlyn Gaige Thompson, Hazen Gregory Thompson, Lillian Genevieve Thompson, Taberlee Nicole Klapheke, Tatum Braylen Klapheke, Ryder Tate McKinney, Harper Hope McKinney, Londyn Michelle Klapheke, Jensen Morris Klapheke, Penelope Mae Thompson and “Heavenly Angels” Adelyn Hope McKinney and Cooper Tate McKinney.
Siblings, Sarah “Sally” Whitaker, Linda Dahlman, Doshia VanHoose and Mary June McBride.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 5, 2023 at 2:00 PM in the Young Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Tammy Smith officiating. Graveside services will be held immediately afterwards at the Roberts family cemetery in Fallsburg, KY.
Friends may visit the family on Thursday, October 5, 2023 at from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM in the Young Funeral Home Chapel.
