The Louisa Rotary Club met Thursday, May 12, with Superintendent Robbie Fletcher filling in for the scheduled speaker Mia Brown, ACTC, Project Director Credit Counts. Dr. Fletcher spoke about “Credit Counts” which is a program funded by AEP to boost STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) education and help students earn college credit while still in high school.
The foundation has awarded an $815,000 Credit Counts grant to aid eastern Kentucky school districts, the first such grant in Kentucky. The Foundation’s goal with the grant is to help students become fully prepared to graduate from high school ready for a career or with significant college credits toward a degree.
Dr. Fletcher spoke about wanting the kids to be more hands on with Science with project “Lead The Way” and that the only thing at this point standing in the way of implementing it was a cost of approximately $100,000. With so many opportunities for students in Lawrence County, they have the opportunity for great success!
Another announcement at this week’s meeting was that for the first time, Lawrence County High School Graduation 2016 will be televised through Lycom on the My Town TV channel (channel 100 and 200 HD).
The next speaker; Mark Idjigberou a visitor from Benin, Africa (West Africa) who’s group named “Reach The Rest” spoke about reaching the unreachable, and spreading the word of God. “Reach the Rest” blends traditional approaches to reach the unengaged, find a church close by and close the gap between the two.
He also explained how they visit orphanages and help to teach the children to read and write. More can be read about his organization at www.reachtherest.org.
The meeting closed as Rotarians presented a $1,500 check to the Louisa City Park for new swing sets which cost $2,800.
