Professor Sonny Branham receives the 2016 ‘Mentoring Through Service Learning award’
To God be the glory, great things He hath done.— Thank you ORU Alumni Association. smile emoticon “Professor Sonny Branham uses his passion for religious freedom, protection of our God-given rights, and the recognition of government’s role to do such in his desire to mentor and serve ORU students and alumni.
Professor Branham focuses on establishing personal relationships with these world-changers; to not only provide them opportunities for personal and professional growth, but also to assist them to make the transition from students to young professionals.
Among the previous and current ways he helps mentor students has been to serve as faculty advisor for ORU’s Oklahoma Intercollegiate Legislature (OIL), Model United Nations, Model Arab League, and College Republican delegations.
At his direction, many students have participated in the semester-long American Studies Program in Washington, DC. In addition he and his students for many years have performed service learning by assisting immigrants in gaining United States citizenship.
Highly committed to community involvement for the students’ benefits, his extensive connections in the Tulsa area governmental realm are great aids for those who want to go into every person’s world through civic engagement. Many have secured internships, full and part-time jobs and volunteer opportunities.
“We have to give our labor away before we can sell it,” he contends. For these reasons and more, Professor Branham receives the 2016 Mentoring Through Service Learning award.”
