LOUISA, KY. — The Lawrence County Sheriff Department is warning local residents of an unusual scam that has recently been showing up in people’s mailboxes around the county.
According to Lawrence County Sheriff Chuck Jackson, fake county tax bills, that are realistic looking, including having correct personal information are being placed in mailboxes in Lawrence County.
In an interview with Hungtington, West Virginia TV news station WSAZ, Sheriff Jackson explained what the fake tax bills sought, what type of action those named in the forged documents are to do in order to “settle their account”, and his advice on how someone should properly undertake if they are suspicious about the documents.
“You’re to contact the 800 number, because it makes it easier for them to get your information and to decipher what they need to do; whether it be to send a cashier’s check or direct you to go get money cards,” according to Sheriff Chuck Jackson.
When someone is seeing personal information like a familiar amount or your name and address, the Lawrence County Sheriff Department says this is where the fact checking comes into play.
“Benefits Suspension Unit, Lawrence County Public Judgement Records; well, the first thing I would do is verify the information that that is a real entity,” Sheriff Jackson said.
Both the county attorney’s office and sheriff’s office will issue notices of a delinquent tax bill. If you think you got a forged letter, you’re asked to contact the county attorney’s office and they will have a record of it.
“If any Lawrence County residents (and all other persons living in the surrounding regions), and you are on the verge of handing over any cash; you should take the time to spot the hidden details and make some calls to your local police, city and county employees to make sure you avoid an expensive trap,” Jackson said.
So I can’t pay my delinquent property taxes with itunes cards or gift certificates to Chili’s? What is this world coming to?
Chuck may be doing it himself, since he got on WSAZ, and has his picture in this article! He must have forgotten he was sheriff and appointed himself to SGT! I’m a strong Republican and proud of it, but I would have voted for the other guy. I’ve always thought the office of Sheriff should be non-partizen (I know that’s spelled wrong, but I don’t care). I watched DD Price play newspaper hero in Johnson County…until he lost the election.
IDGET!
Yes…you are.
I was told by Wheelers family that he was going to be running for Sheriff again
He’s probably the one making all these negative comments about Sheriff Jackson.
Why don’t you tell us about all the great law enforcement work Sheriff Jackson does George? I sure as hell don’t see any! I’m a solid Republican BTW.
