Savage Farms in Fallsburg, known for making great tasting Maple Syrup had just kicked off Kentucky Maple Day on February 1, 2020, when the owners announced they have applied to add a Winery (to sell wine) at the Farm.
Keith and Jennifer Moore will find out if it will be approved in the May Primary 2020. If passed, they will be the first Maple flavored wine producers in Eastern KY.
County Clerk Chris Jobe said the law changed last year allowing voting by precinct on wineries in an effort to boost the industry in the state. The Moores got their application in on January 22, just six days before the deadline on Jan. 28, Jobe said. He said only voters registered in the Fallsburg precinct will be allowed to vote and the winery will not be licensed to sell other alcoholic drinks.
Keith wants the community to know that this not going to be a place to sell liquor and beer.
It will not be a place for people to come to and get drunk. He has no intensions of opening a bar. Instead, this will be a place to draw the community together, with people coming from around the country to stop by and visit a winery.
“It will bring uniqueness to the community, as we make the maple syrup and Bourbon Barrel Aged Maple Syrup as well as the wine,” Steve Moore said.
They grow some of the fruits for their sweet fruit wines right on the farm. He has been asked by tour bus companies to give tours of Savage Farms if approved.
Keith and Jennifer are originally from Boyd county, they moved to Fallsburg with a beautiful country setting. Keith is a retired State Trooper and his wife Jennifer is a nurse at Kings Daughters Hospital. Their son is also a KY State Trooper.
If they get approved by the voters of Fallsburg they will be selling it right from the farm, as well as events such as The Septemberfest in Lawrence County, KY and other events. They have made about five different wines so far but plan on having around ten different flavors if approved.
The Moores are working on getting their wholesale license, as many retailers wants to sell it such as Dionysus, as well as several places in Ashland, Grayson and Paintsville.
One popular wine they have made is the Maple flavored with Mullen Spice and Cranapple which is served warm, making it great during any weather especially cold weather.
I had the privilege to sample the Strawberry and Blueberry wines and they were amazing! You can look up Savage Farms Page on Facebook for more info.
Great idea! This is how an area prospers, more small business I hope the area is not filled with dried up old ‘Drybabies’.
Great news for Tourism in Lawrence County! The Moore family members are great representatives of our county and of Agritourism!
my only queston is will louisa residents get anythang from this will this benafit us
It depends on how you define a benefit KAG, small wineries, micro breweries and small distilleries are being tried across the nation and are a relatively new thing (the legal kind). They are taxed, they provide jobs and tourism is to one degree or another a factor, so how do you define benefit? Ever hear of the “Jack Danial’s” distillery, which for years was in a dry county, (not anymore). It has been toured by millions, and they weren’t locals either.
Why would it KAG. It’s the county. Did the county get to vote to make Louisa “wet”?? Umm.. no.
It’s insane that Mr & Ms Moore have to request permission from others to sell goods and services on his own property. The state of insanity boggles my mind.
You can make many things on your own property Lee, if you sell it you need a license. If it is an alcoholic beverage and you sell it, you need a local option election wet/dry, and a license, wholesale or retail. However, if the Moore family drinks all the wine themselves…their a happy group of people!
I’ll vote yes. Prohibition ended a long damn time ago. No voters need to get with the times. Plus it might be some great wine and good times involved, what wrong with that?
Well if they pass pot, can I have a pot farm?
That has been a dream of mine for years DB.
Absolutely, why not?
Very cool. I love wineries. And it’s in my neck of the woods. The vote will be “yes” from Two Creek Farm
I’m sure they will get plenty of votes from the women. They have to have their “mommy juice”.
Hea, Joe C, that’s about the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard? What in the name of God does it mean?
Joe C must watch Lifetime movies. The moms in those movies are constantly drinking wine. Don’t ask how I know that.
This is a great day to have a bottle or two of wine, our Great President was found Not Guilty by The Senate.
May God Bless America.
TRUMP 2020.
Amen Charles!
I think it will be a great business which will help benefit Lawrence County. We have Yatesville Lake and it has helped the county. How great would it be for your buses to stop and visit the winery and visit the lake. It’s a win, win situation in my opinion!
I agree Sandra. I sadly have never been to Yatesville Lake, I went there years ago before the lake, the next time I get up there hope to see it. I’m curious what a maple flavor spiced wine tastes like? Hopefully I can find out.
