KY POWER 100TH ANNIVERSARY EXHIBIT ON DISPLAY AT HIGHLANDS MUSEUM
ASHLAND, Ky., June 17, 2019 – Kentucky Power, formed in Ashland on July 21, 1919, as Kentucky and West Virginia Power, is celebrating its centennial this year. As part of the celebration, a historic exhibit is now on display at the Highlands Museum and Discovery Center.
“This is an opportunity to learn about a company that has been vital to our community for a century,” said Heather Whitman, Highlands curator and registrar. “When we turn on a light, we don’t think about what goes into providing this luxury. In this exhibit, visitors can learn about what Kentucky Power means to our area.”
The exhibit includes photos and memorabilia, as well as a video that traces the company’s early years and its development and contributions over 100 years to eastern Kentucky. The video includes interviews with employees representing all three service districts – Ashland, Hazard and Pikeville.
“Today, it is a rarity for a company to have been in business for 100 years,” said Kentucky Power President Brett Mattison. “We know we couldn’t have reached this milestone without good relationships with the customers and communities we serve in eastern Kentucky. As we celebrate our centennial, we want to emphasize our appreciation for our customers, while sharing Kentucky Power’s commitment to being a good corporate citizen. The museum display is one way we can share our story and express our gratitude to our valued customers and the communities we have served for 100 years and will continue to serve.”
The Highlands Museum is located at 1620 Winchester Avenue in Ashland. The museum is open Wednesday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is closed Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. The exhibit will be on display through at least August.
