DEADLY KNOX COUNTY ALTERCATION: BRIAN SCOTT SMITH, 40, OF GRAY, KY., WAS CHARGED AND ARRESTED ON APRIL 13 WITH THE SHOOTING DEATH OF SHELBY LEE MCINTYRE, 42, OF GRAY, KY.
According to a press news release, on early Thursday morning, April 13, 2023 at 4:55 A.M., Kentucky State Police, Post 10, located in the city of Harlan, in Harlan County, received a call from the Knox County Sheriff Department needing assistance on Dr. Parker Lane in the Gray community area of Knox County. Deputies with the Knox County Sheriff Department responded and located a female deceased inside of a residence from a gunshot wound.
Troopers and Detectives from KSP Post 10 responded and began an investigation, quickly determining that the fatally gunshot wounded woman came as the result of a homicide.
The initial investigation indicates Shelby Lee McIntyre, 42, of Gray, KY., was involved in an altercation with Brian Scott Smith, 40, of Gray, KY., when Brian Smith brandished and discharged a firearm resulting in Shelby McIntyre’s death. Brian Smith fled the scene in a blue colored Ford vehicle.
KSP Post 10 detectives soon thereafter were able to legally secure a murder arrest warrant for Brian Smith. State Police sent out a public alert on Brian Smith, describing him as 5’feet 11″inches, weigh150 pounds, and with blue eyes. State police warned that Brian Smith was to be considered to be armed and dangerous while on the run.
Later in the same day on Thursday afternoon, Detectives with KSP Post 10 were able to make contact with Brian Smith by phone and agree on him turning himself in.
At 3:15 P.M.,Kentucky State Police troopers apprehended Brian Smith,placing him into custody.Brian Smith was arrested on KY 830 on the Knox/Laurel line, just inside Laurel County. He was also charged with six (6) extra motor traffic violations, which were: *No Registration Plates, *No Registration Receipt, *Failure Of Owner To Maintain Required Insurance 1st Offense *Failure To Produce Insurance Card, *Improper Registration Plate, *Operating On Suspended Or Revoked Operators License
Brian Smith was interviewed by KSP detectives, and he was subsequently charged with the murder of Shelby McIntyre. Brian Smith was lodged into the Knox County Detention Center in Barborville; where he initially was being held on a $500,000 full cash bond, but during his arraignment, it was decreased to $250,000.
The case is under investigation by KSP Post 10 Detective Aaron Frederick . Also assisting KSP Post 10 at the crime scene were the Knox County Sheriff Department, and the Knox County Coroner’s Office.
