ASHLAND, Ky., May 2, 2018 -– Johnson County Schools on Wednesday received about $125,000 in cash incentives from Kentucky Power after completing energy-saving projects, including lighting, heating and ventilation, and other improvements at seven schools.
The upgrades were installed in 2017 at Johnson Central High School, Johnson County Middle School, Central Elementary, Flat Gap Elementary, Highland Elementary, Porter Elementary and W.R. Castle Elementary as part of a $5 million project. The school system earned a total of $125,620 last year. Nearly $602 was awarded in February and $125,018 was awarded Wednesday.
Johnson County Schools Energy Manager Terry Salyer worked with Kentucky Power’s Commercial Incentive Prescriptive Custom Program to earn cash back for energy efficiency upgrades that were part of the project. The rebate program has since been discontinued by the Kentucky Public Service Commission to reduce monthly surcharges paid by Kentucky Power customers to support the program.
“These improvements will save Johnson County Schools in the neighborhood of $300,000 a year,” Salyer said. “We will see a return on our investment in only eight years.”
E.J. Clayton, who led Kentucky Power’s energy efficiency and consumer programs manager until they were recently discontinues, said improvement projects like the ones in Johnson County help customer save money and energy.
“When government agencies or schools like Johnson County schools reduce energy consumption, the money saved can be invested elsewhere,” Clayton said.
Johnson County’s improvements included the installation of energy efficiency lights, new heating, ventilation and air conditioning units, energy efficient kitchen appliances and other upgrades.
