Lawrence County Schools are undergoing quite a few changes in the coming year including of the management of the local Adult Education program, Lawrence co. Supt. Rob Fletcher said.
In addition several teachers who were employed this past year were laid off of their one year contracts although some, if not all, will be called back next school year.
But the Lawrence Co. Adult Education program will be shifted to state run KEDC.
“Our adult education program is one of the best programs in Lawrence County and in our state, in my opinion,” Supt. Rob Fletcher said in a prepared statement today.
Here is how Fletcher described the situation in a message to The Lazer:
“…Earlier this year, we were notified that state funding for adult education would be distributed in a different manner. An individual school system of our size cannot receive adult education funding.
The funding can only be made available through an educational cooperative (like KEDC or KVEC) or through a consortium of school districts. Since we can no longer receive funding, we had to ask KEDC to include Lawrence County in their grant application. Thankfully, they agreed.
We will still have an adult education program in Lawrence County in the same building, but it will be operated by KEDC.
Technically, Mr. Ellis and his staff will not be employees of the Lawrence County School District. The staff members that meet the requirements of the grant will become employees of KEDC. Since the Lawrence County Board of Education no longer has oversight of the program, we had to cut the positions from our records.
Again, an adult education program will be provided to the people of Lawrence County, but it will be operated by KEDC due to the funding changes from the state level. We are allowing KEDC to use the current facility.”
